Term: Hydrofoil

Definition:

A hydrofoil is a wing-like structure placed outside the hull of a boat. As speed increases, the hydrodynamic lift works similar to a plane's aerodynamic lift and lifts the hull of the boat out of the water. This results in less friction and allows greater speeds to be achieved.
