Port of Rijeka Authority

Port of Rijeka Authority - Cruise Destination

The Port of Rijeka is the first port in Croatia to be opened to international public traffic, and because of its size and location has been declared of vital importance to the country’s economy.

Situated at the junction of the main land and water trade routes, Rijeka is central to the growth of the whole region. The aim of the Rijeka Gateway Project is to enable easy access from the port to the mainland and connect with the suburbs.

THE RIJEKA GATEWAY PROJECT

The project aims to support the transformation and modernisation of the port of Rijeka and increase the competitiveness of the transport sector in general. As part of the project, the existing terminal will be modernised and new terminals added.

New modern cargo handling and other equipment will be brought in and the middle area of the port basin will be opened for commercial purposes.

NEW PASSENGER TERMINAL

The passenger terminal and other nearby port areas such as southern Delta and Porto Baros will be redesigned to encourage people to visit and use these parts of town. The project will also reconstruct the land where the port facilities are situated and will create:

  • A modern passenger terminal with accompanying facilities
  • A reconstructed passenger port
  • A nautical centre and marina
  • A connecting road to the Rijeka bypass

This project will create many attractive new spots in Rijeka, paying homage both to its Mediterranean traditions and its modern maritime usages.

PORT FACILITIES

The planned development cannot be started before the port facilities are relocated from Delta and Porto Baros to the new terminals. Bulk cargo will be moved to the Bakar bulk terminal, while timber will be moved to the western part of the port, where the construction of the modern multipurpose terminal is planned.

Work in the Rijeka basin will begin with the demolition of the old non-functional warehouses and the creation of new spaces, as the construction of a new terminal, the Zagrebačka pier, enters its final stages.

The Rijeka Gateway Project includes the financing and construction of the first 300m of the total 600m long new shore. By the removal of the existing INA facilities from the centre of the town and by the construction of the additional 600m, the shore will have a length of 1,200m and about 300,000m²of new area at its disposal.
